Not so long ago Tsilivi was a fairly quite resort. Now it's second only to Laganas in terms of size and nightlife. It's still a long way from being a Club 18-30 resort, for which most people are grateful, but it has such a variety of restaurants and bars that you will always find something to suit. It's still a good choice for families and couples, and most accommodation is located well away from any noise .

The beach is one of the best on the island, but it can get very busy in July and August. Only a few of miles northwest of Zante Town, there is an hourly bus service to the capital. Road signs in this area are hopeless, so make sure you've got a map if you venture out.

The centre with its abundance of shops, bars and restaurants lining the main road is set back a quarter of a mile from the beach, which has its own cluster of bars and snack bars. Planos, 1,100 yards away from the centre, has its own hub of hotels, a smaller choice of shops, bars and restaurants and narrow Bouka Beach.

This is a family-orientated resort, also suitable for couples. Predominantly British with a smattering of German and Dutch. Lots of Greek visitors in July and August.

There is small choice of budget and mid-range hotels and plenty of self-catering accommodation, much of which is family run. Nothing fancy just enough for fun in the sun. Hotels and some self-catering accommodation have their own pools.

Locality:

Tsilivi is located towards the centre of the N coast, 4 mls NW of Zakynthos and 6 mls NW of airport. It is set on essentially flat ground set between a low cliff and jutting headland, with hills rising behind resort. Surrounded by countryside with olive groves.

A small resort, with the main accommodation positioned along a 1½-mile stretch, Tsilivi has grown in both popularity and area in recent years; as a result, it is beginning to lose its village feel, although it is still a genuinely friendly place, popular with families. There are two distinct areas: the resort centre and Planos.

Tsilivi Beach with its fine dark sand is around half a mile long and slopes gently into a clear sea, making it ideal for children; part of it is backed by undeveloped fields although this may change given the pace of building work. .

There are plenty of minimarkets meeting all basic needs. A few gold shops which sell hand-made jewellery and plenty of tourist gift shops with the usual souvenirs as well as natural sea sponges.

During the daytime there are water sports on Tsilivi Beach. Other activities include horse riding. Nothing in particular for children to do except enjoy pools and beaches.

The nightlife consists of a few discos in resort centre plus an abundance of bars geared towards family evenings or a fun night out, many show recent films in the early evening and there are also karaoke and quiz nights. Evening horse and carriage rides around resort.

A nice choice of restaurants serving British food (even roasts on Sundays!) or traditional Greek cuisine. A couple of Chinese restaurants and pizzerias. Generally an inexpensive resort.

Greece appeals to different types of tourist, and very few could fail to find somewhere to suit their taste. From bustling Athens to blindingly bright islands, ancient fragments abound - the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and even, quite possibly, the remnants of Atlantis at Santorini. Greeks are fierce guardians of tradition, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to have fun. In addition, hot sun and limpid seas conspire to make Greece a perfect place to relax. Whether you're supping in a beachside taverna , sipping coffee in a shady plateia or disco-dancing till dawn.

The Olympic Games were spawned in ancient classical Greece, along with democracy and the fundamentals of philosophy, science and mathematics. Modern Greece is better known as a great place to vacation rather than a centre of learning and culture. Today the country attracts by offering simple pleasures: delicious food at reasonable prices, local wine, beautiful beaches, sunshine, quaint villages, a seemingly endless lacework of coastline and little islands full of scenic surprises.

The country exudes traditional charm, particularly on its ever-popular islands, which cling to their stereotypical architecture and way of life despite being often over-run by tourists. Black-clad women still deliver vegetables to island tavernas on panniered donkeys, while bronzed, lined fishermen sit in the sun, drink thick coffee, and play dominoes or dice. The tourist infrastructure has intruded in many respects, but the timeless aspect of whitewashed buildings clustered on hillsides around narrow pebbled alleys has been retained. The myriad islands in the Aegean Sea are easily accessible from Piraeus, the historic harbour of Greece's mainland capital, Athens, by ferry or hydrofoil, offering a unique chance for 'island-hopping'. Many of the larger islands also have airports with connections to Athens or seasonally with major European cities.

On the mainland the city of Athens in the south is sprawling, overcrowded and polluted but nevertheless enthralls visitors, while Thessaloniki in the north is vibrant and modern with a Byzantine flavour. Athens is dominated by its major landmark, the Parthenon: the remains of other wonders of the ancient Greek classical world are to be found mainly on the Peloponnese Peninsula, south of Corinth, the gateway to a veritable treasure trove of history.

Greece and Greeks welcome with open arms the thousands of visitors that flock to admire their national assets every year - no-one leaves without having been warmed, both by the sun and the hospitality.
