Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina offers something for everyone. For the history buff, Raleigh features several walking tours of their tree-lined, Victorian-era neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For the burgeoning student, Raleigh sponsors over 20 free museums, a rich arts district, and is home to North Carolina State University and its college-aged population. If it's outdoor recreation you're after, more than 156 parks and lakes are found in greater Raleigh, along with 39 miles of paths or "greenways" that are specifically designed for jogging, biking, or simply strolling along and taking in the natural splendor and Southern gentility that is Raleigh, North Carolina.
Raleigh is the largest of the cities that compose the North Carolina's Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). It's an area that's been characterized as full of "trees, tees, and Ph.D's."
Raleigh is Old South and New South, down-home and upscale, all in one. The city has agrarian roots in both farming and mining, but today Raleigh thrives on high-tech industries, government, education, service industries, research, and medicine. In addition to North Carolina State, there are six other universities and colleges in town.

Raleigh is a very open and welcoming city, with many areas of parkland along with a number of historical sites to explore. In Oakwood for example there is a lovely Victorian area that even has houses open to the public showing what life was like in those times. There are also the cultural centres that are free of charge to visitors and are definitely worth a visit - the Museums of Art, National Sciences and History.
Shopping in Raleigh - Raleigh is the home of the Mall or at least that's how it appears. With the heart of the city retaining a lot of its heritage it has been left to the Malls to offer the diversity of retail options that a thriving city such as this demands. Crabtree Valley Mall for example has over 200 retailers, and this is not the only one in the area.
Sports in Raleigh - Professional sports in Raleigh are somewhat limited, although the College scene is a thriving one with the Universities all having strong teams in the main US sports of American Football and basketball. At a more recreational level though sport is tremendously popular here, with many leagues active in a diversity of sports.

The USA is home to several of the world's most exciting cities, some truly mind-blowing landscapes, a strong sense of regionalism, a trenchant mythology, more history than the country gives itself credit for and, arguably, some of the most approachable natives in the world.
America was 'discovered' by Columbus in 1492 and for 500 years people have travelled here seeking a better life in the 'land of opportunity'. The land was fought over by colonial powers for centuries and finally won its independence from Britain in 1783. Despite the near annihilation of the Native American population, one of the bloodiest civil wars the world had seen, and racism (Native Americans were not granted citizenship until 1924 and racial segregation was the norm until as late as the 1950s), the American people have succeeded in forging one of the worlds most united, democratic and tolerant nations, a fascinating melting-pot of cultures, and the undisputed military and economic heavyweight of the world.
The country is made up of 48 contiguous states of the continental USA, plus the huge state of Alaska, northwest of Canada, and the volcanic islands of Hawaii, 2,000 miles (3,219km) out into the Pacific. There are also the US territories, which include Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Midway Islands and US Virgin Islands. Tourism is focused mainly in the great cities such as New York and Washington, as well as sunshine states such as Florida, California and Hawaii. However the mind-blowing landscapes, found in the wealth of magnificent National Parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Adirondacks, as well as spectacular sights like the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains, are what make the USA so unique. With all this on their doorstep, it's easy to understand why most Americans have never bothered getting a passport. |
