The jewel in Rhodes' crown, Lindos is a 'National Historic Landmark' that's retained much of its authentic village atmosphere. Growth has been restricted in recent years by strict by-laws so therefore accommodation is quite limited.
The ancient fortified Acropolis which overlooks the village is one of the island's major tourist attractions and sightseers come in their droves to visit it, consequently the narrow streets below tend to get rammed with people.
Motorized traffic has been banished to the outskirts of town so locals and holidaymakers alike get about on foot.
Tourists are often advised that Lindos is at least a degree or two hotter than the rest of the island - this is not a myth and the sun can be extremely intense. Due to the hilly location it is not recommended for the less mobile.
This resort caters for upmarket clientele in the hotels and outside the village to lower-budget travellers in the village. Larger hotels cater well for families.
Most holiday accommodation in the village itself tends to be in older-style houses and is very basic, Lindos is a protected village and planning permission for new building work is rarely given, so swimming pools are nonexistent and air conditioning rare. The large hotels on Vliha Bay, on the other hand, have a varied range of modern facilities
Locality:
Lindos is in the middle of the east coast, 33 mls S of Rhodes Town, 37 mls S of the airport. Vliha, where the large hotels are situated, is 2 mls N of the actual village of Lindos. It is found clinging to a hillside below the ancient acropolis and above 2 bays, Lindos Bay to the north and St Paul's Bay to the south.

Lindos has 2 beaches, the main one of which, on Lindos Bay, is considered by some to be the best on the island, the swimming here is safe and there is a range of water sports as well as loungers and beachfront tavernas. It can be very crowded during the summer months.
Lindos has a large selection of supermarkets and the usual tourist shops. Common items include jewellery, leather sandals and traditional-style ceramics. Vliha has some basic shops near the hotels.
During the daytime activities are mainly beach- and water-based, including water-skiing, jet-skiing, paragliding and banana boat. For the cultural types exploring the town, including the ancient acropolis, amphitheatre and the local church for its unusual frescoes. Day trips to the local Rhodes town to explore even more history.
The nightlife here offers numerous bars, either with music or satellite TV, a few disco and late-evening shopping. For a more 'wild' night out a short taxi ride to the nearby Faliraki should quench the wildside.
There are a wide variety of restaurants to suit all tastes, ranging from traditional cuisine to good-quality Italian, Mexican and Chinese. Several fast-food options selling crepes or stuffed filo pastry.

Greece appeals to different types of tourist, and very few could fail to find somewhere to suit their taste. From bustling Athens to blindingly bright islands, ancient fragments abound - the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and even, quite possibly, the remnants of Atlantis at Santorini. Greeks are fierce guardians of tradition, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to have fun. In addition, hot sun and limpid seas conspire to make Greece a perfect place to relax. Whether you're supping in a beachside taverna , sipping coffee in a shady plateia or disco-dancing till dawn.
The Olympic Games were spawned in ancient classical Greece, along with democracy and the fundamentals of philosophy, science and mathematics. Modern Greece is better known as a great place to vacation rather than a centre of learning and culture. Today the country attracts by offering simple pleasures: delicious food at reasonable prices, local wine, beautiful beaches, sunshine, quaint villages, a seemingly endless lacework of coastline and little islands full of scenic surprises.
The country exudes traditional charm, particularly on its ever-popular islands, which cling to their stereotypical architecture and way of life despite being often over-run by tourists. Black-clad women still deliver vegetables to island tavernas on panniered donkeys, while bronzed, lined fishermen sit in the sun, drink thick coffee, and play dominoes or dice. The tourist infrastructure has intruded in many respects, but the timeless aspect of whitewashed buildings clustered on hillsides around narrow pebbled alleys has been retained. The myriad islands in the Aegean Sea are easily accessible from Piraeus, the historic harbour of Greece's mainland capital, Athens, by ferry or hydrofoil, offering a unique chance for 'island-hopping'. Many of the larger islands also have airports with connections to Athens or seasonally with major European cities.
On the mainland the city of Athens in the south is sprawling, overcrowded and polluted but nevertheless enthralls visitors, while Thessaloniki in the north is vibrant and modern with a Byzantine flavour. Athens is dominated by its major landmark, the Parthenon: the remains of other wonders of the ancient Greek classical world are to be found mainly on the Peloponnese Peninsula, south of Corinth, the gateway to a veritable treasure trove of history.
Greece and Greeks welcome with open arms the thousands of visitors that flock to admire their national assets every year - no-one leaves without having been warmed, both by the sun and the hospitality. |
