Overview:

A castle enthusiast's dream, this area also offers excellent golf courses, fantastic walking, great river fishing and delightful local produce and restaurants.

Evidence of the region's previous inhabitants is hard to miss. A large swathe of history comes alive from remains such as the Roman amphitheatre in Caerleon to the highly fortified Raglan Castle and the inspiring ruins of medieval Tintern Abbey.

Golfers are excellently catered for, with no less than 18 courses in the area, including the prestigious Celtic Manor resort, where the Wentwood Hills course will be the battleground for the Ryder Cup in 2010.

Fans of the great outdoors will not be disappointed. There are two national trails, and over 1000 miles of public paths following meandering rivers, gentle hills, to the rugged Black Mountains.

Local, homegrown, often organic produce features heavily in the area, with several vineyards, produce markets and farmers markets, which feature closely in the wide variety of superior restaurants in the region.

Locality:

The tranquil River Wye forms a natural border between England and Wales and is a beautiful place for a spot of angling. The waters are famed for their salmon and trout as well as the local delicacy of elvers in late spring.
