One of the most beautiful of Ireland's inland counties. Tyrone has a fine variety of scenery, mountains and gentle hills, glens and river valleys, moorland and little plains.
There is some low land bordering Lough Neagh in the east, and in the river valleys in the north-west, but the rest of the county is hilly, and towards the County Derry border in the north and land piles up in the 2,000 foot peaks of the Sperrin Mountains .
Covering an area of some 1200 square miles in the heart of Northern Ireland is Tyrone, an inland county with spectacular scenery from the wild Sperrin Mountains in the north, sweeping down to the rich pastoral lowlands of the south. County Tyrone has an abundance of crystal clear waterways including the Rivers Mourne, Derg and Owenreagh.
Visitors to County Tyrone can enjoy the wonderful outdoors and natural landscape with an array of activities. The Sperrins offer superb hill walking and cycling, abundant wildlife; and angling throughout a maze of rivers and loughs. The River Strule and Fairy Water near Omagh are renowned for excellent coarse fishing; while the Rivers Mourne, Derg and Camowen offer plentiful salmon and trout fishing. There are several top class Golf Clubs and Courses across the County, equestrian centres and charming country villages to visit.
Omagh is the largest town in Tyrone. Other significant townships are Strabane, Dungannon, Cookstown, Clogher, Aughnacloy and Castlederg. The population of County Tyrone is just over 150,000.
