Stresa is a pleasant, colourful little town owing much of its fashionable reputation to its beautiful setting. It faces the famous Isola Bella and is surrounded by lush green vegetation with snow capped mountains in the background. The town is compact with some interesting old buildings, shops and cafes. It is unfortunate that the very busy main road runs along the lakefront.

Stresa is a traditional resort best suiting older people due to lack of nightlife; although younger couples and families find it a good touring centre and there are many day visitors. Definitely not for young singles and teenagers.

There is a good range of medium to high standard hotels including some offering B&B only. Very little self-catering and nothing cheap available.

Stesa is situated on the west shore of Lake Maggiore (50 mls from Milan, 25 mls from Malpensa airport and Swiss border). Stresa is positioned on a lake shore facing Borromean Islands and Pallanza on opposite shore. At foot of 5000 ft. Mottarone mountain.

Shopping in this town is quite good, plenty of shops selling a selection of gifts and souvenirs. All shops seem to be very pricey.

There are some scenic but strenuous walks in the hills or gentle strolls along the promenade. 1 ml from centre is a bathing lido and cable car; in hills behind a golf course and at the entrance to the resort a park with zoo. There is very little to do in the evenings apart from occasional music in one of the bars or hotels.

There is a good range of restaurants and pizzerias although not many are open-air. Prices average to expensive with service and cover charges often added to bill.
