Holiday guide Kalamaki

A typical Greek resort which is slowly catching on to idea of tourism. Spread over a large area it is not built up and has a feeling of freedom and relaxation.

Kalamaki has changed quite a bit over the past few years and the resort is now spread out over a fairly large area. Fortunately most of the development has been concentrated on the main Kalamaki to Laganas road leaving the beach area and back roads relatively undisturbed.

The original character of the resort is still there. The bars, restaurants and people who first made it popular are still here. The Cave Bar shown left, has hardly changed over the years, and still offers something unique. It's the closest resort to the airport and although there are no night flights, several planes land just after 6.00 AM.

Only the western part of the resort is affected and otherwise the resort is fairly quiet and relaxing. It's a good location, close to Laganas, Zante Town and Argassi. Laganas is only a five minute taxi ride away, and taxis run until the early hours of the morning. Don't worry if you don't have a pool as there are plenty of pool bars which are open to the public.

Anyone wanting a peaceful holiday (notwithstanding regular aircraft noise), more likely to please families, couples and older people.

Several pleasant hotels; also self-catering studios are present in the area.

Kalamaki is on the south east coast of the island about 2½ mls NE of the lively resort of Laganas (3 mls S of the island's capital, Zakynthos). Closest resort to the airport, ½ mile). It is backed by mountains with extensive countryside and olive groves.

The beach here is an extension of Laganas Beach, Kalamaki has the same qualities, unspoilt sand with superb clear water. The beach is occasionally used by nesting turtles. Pedalloes available.

There are local minimarkets offering a good choice. Several tourist shops available, but Zakynthos town is fairly close offers more choice.

During the daytime there are long winding roads backed by mountains and olive groves for peaceful walks whilst watching the planes take off and land.

The nightlife here offers one disco just outside the resort at the top of a hill. There are also a few bars offering family entertainment, karaoke and quiz nights.

This reosrt is home to some of the best traditional Greek tavernas on Zante. Some restaurants serve English food, but it's worth going Greek because of the quality of the food.
