Holiday guide Fuengirola

Overview:

Basically a ribbon development, Fuengirola sprawls for 6½ mls along the beach, extending 1½ mls inland at its widest point. The resort has the feel of a mini-Benidorm, with thickly spread, high-rise buildings catering for the vast influx of mainly British tourists. However, it still boasts a large fishing fleet, and the narrow, generally busy coast road is pleasant enough, stretching the length of the beach. The bustling central tourist-orientated area covers 4 mls of beach front which is roughly divided by the marina and extends rather chaotically inland for ½ ml; city-centre driving is certainly not for the faint of heart or those with a fear of parallel parking.

Locality:

Fuengirola is situated on Spain's S coast, roughly midway between Torremolinos (to the E) and Marbella (to the W). It is 19 mls SW of Malaga; 16 mls SW of Malaga airport.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Fuengirola caters for all types, but is more popular with families and middle-aged to mature couples, as well as golfers.

Accommodation varies from hostels and pensions to 4-star hotels, but the majority are apartment blocks or complexes.

The sandy beach here stretches for 6½ mls, except for a break in the vicinity of the marina, where various water sports can be enjoyed. The promenade is lined with open-air cafes and bars.

Shopper holics are well catered for with a varied selection of merchandise. At least 4 hypermarkets on the outskirts. Large Tues-morning market (known as the most popular on the coast) in the centre of the resort.

Entertainment tends to be beach based activities and water sports including beach volleyball and windsurfing. SIghtseeing also offers a visit to the remains of the Moorish Castle of Sohail, on a hill on the W outskirts of town. There is also a zoo and a well-equipped water park. Nightlife here is varied, with something to suit everyone.

There are plenty of restaurants in Fuengirola to suit everyone's taste and pocket, either within the resort or just outside. Fish and shellfish, not surprisingly, are the local specialities, but don't be surprised to find an awful lot of bangers and mash!

Getting around the local area is made easy with frequent buses run between Marbella, Torremolinos, Malaga and Mijas, as well as frequent trains every ½ hr throughout the day to Torremolinos and Malaga, with a stop conveniently at the international airport.
