Overview:

The small resort of Es Cana (which measures only ¼ ml by ¾ ml) is a relaxed, low-key affair that exists only as a holiday destination. As such, it has few residential areas and little character or history. It is built around the original small harbour, which is still home to fishing boats and from where you can take a ferry to Ibiza Town, Santa Eulalia or the neighbouring island of Formentera. Pine woods back the crescent-shaped beach within the curved, protected bay that faces 2 small islands about ½ ml off shore. Development is concentrated at either end of the beach, with the resort's rather characterless hotels dominating the N end.

Locality:

Es Cana is located on the NE coast of Ibiza, 12 mls NE of Ibiza Town, 3 mls NE of Santa Eulalia and 16 mls from the airport. Es Cana faces E, and occupies mainly flat land that slopes gently down towards the sea front. Backed by pine woods.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

Es Cana is most suited to the economy to middle market holiday maker and is well suited to families and couples, but probably too quiet for young singles looking for lively, varied nightlife.

Accommodation is mostly 2-star hotels and a few 3-stars, but none higher than that. As regards apartments those with a 1-key rating are in the majority.

Es Cana's main beach is a narrow arc of fine, pale sand packed with sun loungers and served by beach bars and water-sports concessionaires; it's sheltered and therefore very safe for children. A smaller, more exposed beach, Cala Nova, sits behind the harbour; currents can be dangerous at Cala Nova and there's a flag system in operation. Both beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness.

At least 10 supermarkets offer good shopping options, plus a wide selection of newsagents, souvenirs, fashion, sports goods, leather and beachwear. Chemist. Much larger selection in Santa Eulalia, 3 mls. A well-known Hippy Market (with local arts, crafts and household items) takes place every Weds on the outskirts of the town, on the shady pine-clad headland.

Daytime activities tend to centre around the beach and water sports, including water-skiing, pedalloes and jet-skiing. Minigolf, tennis, country walks, boat trips. Nightlife is limited mainly to hotel discos and local music bars. Singing and karaoke at the beachside bars.

Those with an emphasis on 'eating out' will find at least 25 restaurants of various kinds, including Chinese and Italian, but mainly downmarket eggs, beans, chips and hamburger types. No gourmet restaurants; some "tapas" bars, but none outstanding.

A bus service to Santa Eulalia from mid-morning till mid-evening (every ½ hr during the week; hourly at weekends) and a taxi rank in village centre next to bus stop provide the area's public transport options.
