North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. Each region within has its own distinct, natural beauty and charm.

To the west of the county lie the Yorkshire Dales in the Pennine hills, displaying a patchwork of fields and dry-stone walls. The countryside is breathtaking with many natural features and an abundance of rivers and streams, waterfalls and tarns.

To the east are the North Yorkshire Moors, another area of outstanding natural beauty. Heather smothered moors with interspersed dales form the landscape here.

Both the Dales and the Moors are National Parks - areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors are located in NE England in the county of North Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales are everyone's idea of peace and tranquility. The dales are an unspoilt region with small towns and villages which seem to be from a bygone age. The buildings are full of charm and usually have interspersed tea rooms and craft shops.

Although the countryside is ideal for walkers there is so much else to do in the area. There are colourful local markets in many of the towns and castles and abbeys, steam railways, historic houses and magnificent gardens all open to the public.

There are plenty of activities too - everything from hot air balloons to pot-holing.

North Yorkshire Moors

The Moors have vast areas of heather interspersed with tranquil dales and woodland. There are many historic houses and ruined castles and monasteries. When the heather is flowering there can be no more amazing sight.

The famous Lyke Wake Walk - a 40 mile walk across the top of the Moors to be completed within the day - traditionally starts at Osmotherly and ends in Ravenscar on the coast.
