Holiday guide Beruwela

Overview:

56 km. south of Colombo, Beruwela marks the beginning of a 130 km stretch of beach where resort development has taken immense strides in the past few years. Good bathing may be had in the bay all year round. Several tourist hotels of "Star" grade provide comfortable accommodation and meals. Beruwala is considered to be the first Muslim settlement in the Island established by the Arab traders as far back as the 8th century. There is a famous Muslim mosque at the beachhead close to which is a light house, one of several erected along the Sri Lankan coast.

Locality:

Beruwela is located on SW coast, 35 mls S of Colombo, 4 mls N of Bentota. 59 mls S of Bandaranaike international airport. It consists of an unexceptional coastal strip backed by coast road and tropical countryside. Railway runs behind town and away from major hotels.

Entertainment/Facilities/Attractions/Things to do:

The area is very popular with tropical beach lovers and sun worshippers. Honeymooners, families and mature clientele are all well catered for. Weddings are also a popular feature here. Accommodation consists of hotels of varying quality to suit all tastes. Most are located on the "tourist strand" and offer all-inclusive packages with in-house entertainment. Smaller guesthouse-style properties off the main road and near the harbour at N end of resort attract independent travellers.

The beach consists of fine long pale sandy beach protected from the often rough ocean conditions by an offshore reef. There are a modest selection of water sports here, often limited to body surfing during peak season (Nov/April).
