Aghios Stefanos is a beautiful seaside village located 40 km from the city of Kos. This tourist resort has flourished in the last years largely due to its sandy beach and picturesque scenery. Originally Aghios Stefanos was a quiet hamlet of farmers and fishermen, only a few local families now live here during the winter, although the population can swell to around 2,000 in the summer months. The resort has developed slowly since the early 1970s, but with little rhyme or reason, so there is no real centre. The older part is at the S end of town, near the church and (now defunct) old port, and here you'll find a couple of more traditional tavernas. There is also a collection of shops and tourist taverns at the lowest point in the road, but essentially this is a quiet, fairly basic beach resort with little in the way of local culture.
Aghios Stefanos is positioned around a sheltered bay protected by low hills and backed by pleasant rural valley. It is located at the NW corner of island, on the small cape of Kefali, overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is 30 mls NW of Corfu Town and airport.
Aghios Stefanos is popular among the British with families young and old. The main beach here is well over 1 ml in length and up to 80 yds at its widest, boasting fine golden sand with some collections of seaweed. The place is relatively undeveloped, especially at the far end under the cliffs (loungers can be rented in places and a couple of beachside bars are available). Accommodation consist mainly of apartments over the hillside and a couple of small hotels from budget to middlemarket. Entertainment consists mainly of the beach, water sports, cycling and hill walking. By night there are several bars that play music and there is one night club. Getting around Aghios Stefanos is generally limited to Taxi's and 3 or 4 cheap and reliable buses a day to Corfu Town in high season. Full day excursions consist of trips to Corfu Town for sightseeing and shopping, boat trips or cruises to many islands (including Kefalonia and Paxos) and cruises to Albania.
