Overview:
The settlement of Aghios Petros is built 38 km south of Lefkada. The inhabitants are mostly farmers cultivating their land in the surrounding area. The view to the Vassiliki and the mountain of Stavrota is very impressive.
Aghios Petros is merely a small ribbon development built along the main road, which here runs parallel to the beach just a few hundred yards inland. It was developed in the 1990s from empty land as a quiet beach holiday alternative to nearby lively Kavos. The venue depends entirely on tourism and closes down completely in winter.
Locality:
Positioned at the edge of a fairly flat coastal plain, amid scrubland and olive groves, with beachfront dunes. The hills of the Greek mainland and Albania are visible across the sea. Located on the E coast, near the S tip of the island; 1¼ mls N of Kavos, 1½ mls SW of Lefkimmi Port. 28 mls SE of Corfu Town and the airport.
Entertainment/Activities/Facilities/Things to do:
This area mostly appeals to young middlemarket families. Although singles and couples seeking quiet, semirural environment with reasonable proximity to Kavos for nightlife would also be fairly suited to this venue. Accommodation here is nearly all self-catering: mostly in small, plain, villa-style blocks, some of which are on the beach (1 large complex offers apartments with hotel facilities). In terms of beaches there is a long, sandy, uncrowded beach, sheltered by dunes, and is accessed by paths from the main road, 100 to 300 yds away. Parasols, loungers, jet-ski rental and snack bars are available at the wider sections. Daytime entertainment is centred around swimming pools, beach and some water sports. By night tavernas offer live local music; a couple of bars offer small-scale discos. Taxi to Kavos (5 mins) for a full-blown club scene is also an option. Getting around the place can either be entertained through an hourly bus that runs between Kavos and Corfu Town during daytime hours, with stops along the main road. Radio taxis are easily arranged through the tourist office; the short ride to Kavos for nightlife needs advance booking. Hire cars are also available. Irregular ferries to the mainland from Lefkimmi Port are also an option. Excursions consist of full day boat trips from Lefkimmi Port to Paxos-Antipaxos and sea caves, Corfu Town and once weekly to the Blue Lagoon on the mainland; coach trips around the island. Evening: minicruise to Corfu Town.
